I had an ultrasound done early in my pregnancy and was told that my baby was not well. I was told repeatedly to terminate. A chromosomal abnormality was a death sentence. There were no positives given. . no information about life with a DS child. It was terrifying. Had I been more scared or less Becki, I may have listened to the Doctor's advice to terminate. Instead I threatened to walk out if he made that recommendation one more time. I was pregnant and having a baby. Sadly, baby didn't survive much longer than a week, but I adored that baby for the 13.5 weeks I carried him. I really, honestly feel like I missed out on an incredible life with that little guy.
I have joined the DS Group in my area, though I don't feel as if I belong as my DS child was not born. . .but it has allowed me to advocate for clearer, more inclusive information with testing. . ..resources and support instead of fear and deadly recommendations.
Thank you for this post!!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12017667397608706590noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-76905660278678763822012-04-19T23:34:01.457-04:002012-04-19T23:34:01.457-04:00OMG -- love this soooo much. <3 you, girl. xo...OMG -- love this soooo much. <3 you, girl. xoxoGwenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10963513665015373305noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-30924227932537472862012-04-01T19:33:14.164-04:002012-04-01T19:33:14.164-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.TUChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15929114678006935831noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-3077796442244354702012-03-31T23:39:23.403-04:002012-03-31T23:39:23.403-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.My name is Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12532019900834158013noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-87839440919931276342012-03-31T21:30:04.289-04:002012-03-31T21:30:04.289-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Rachelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16915395779182043474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-60556198278544285872012-03-31T17:23:48.024-04:002012-03-31T17:23:48.024-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06551567304485458524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-49139684769003930022012-03-31T16:57:41.597-04:002012-03-31T16:57:41.597-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Rochellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11866781944242761406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-87773411266357434872012-03-31T16:38:44.159-04:002012-03-31T16:38:44.159-04:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Cindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13760897671143549963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-12842769594348552712012-03-29T23:55:38.492-04:002012-03-29T23:55:38.492-04:00I, too, remember those early days in the NICU, try...I, too, remember those early days in the NICU, trying to digest the news that our new baby had Down syndrome, and being fearful and sad . . . but also so grateful that he had made it through his surgery, and that determined knowledge that we were going to give him the best of ourselves.Lisahttp://lisamorguess.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-83296488786529870552012-03-29T22:10:18.669-04:002012-03-29T22:10:18.669-04:00Absolutely we can do this, you can do this. Just love the baby, he is a baby first and foremost. Try not to project and just live in the love. It is awesome you are offering a way for new Mom's to ask and express their feelings.Wordshurtorhealhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12039330463065872512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-12503883569033868512012-03-20T07:35:45.638-04:002012-03-20T07:35:45.638-04:00So true, Lisa! I have often said that the ONLY th...So true, Lisa! I have often said that the ONLY thing that my amniocentesis was able to tell me before my son Josh was born, was that he would have an extra chromosome. The test was unable to predict how adorably cute, how incredibly bright, how funny he would be...There was no way to scientifically measure the amount of joy that he would bring to my life. This is why our prenatal health care delivery system is seriously, tragically flawed. I have contacted The Down Syndrome Congressional Congress about this very subject. The fact that so much money has been dumped into developing this prenatal testing, while the NIH continues to take federal research money AWAY from the Down syndrome population, to me, sends a clear message as to how our government views individuals with Down syndrome & individuals with disabilities in general. The message is that people who have Down syndrome are to be "prevented" from existing. Sorry, but as a parent, I can't sit by & let my son be devalued in this way. For whatever it is worth, my voice will be heard.Looking Uphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00622397350942965771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7576310937763715660.post-7629247056879061892012-03-20T00:54:57.733-04:002012-03-20T00:54:57.733-04:00Perfect Post!
